Moonraker (1979)
A two-page, full-color magazine ad from 1978 heralded the Seiko Memory-Bank Calendar as ‘the first LC digital quartz memory bank calendar’ wristwatch. Its mode can be switched to display a full calendar for any month from January 1930 to December 2009. ‘Memory-Bank’ refers to an option where users can pre-program not-to-be-forgotten dates, up to 12 months hence. No alarm sounds at this stage of development; reminders come by way of flashing LCD segments.
In Moonraker, Moore exclusively wears the M354-5019, model SFX003. Already 27-percent thinner than what Bond wore in the previous film, it further illustrates the momentum building behind the quartz revolution. More options were being added then, without increasing case or cost size, which the power needed to run them had been reduced by 60 percent over the half-dozen previous years.
