Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra model 231.103.92.10.03.001 listed by Ace Jewelers today on its blog as James Bond Skyfall watch

Basel, Switzerland (March 13, 2012)— In an update to its website dated today, Omega Authorized Dealer Ace Jewelers lists a 38.5mm Seamaster Aqua Terra model as a “James Bond Skyfall” watch on its blog.

In its post titled, “Omega Novelties 2012: Price list (incl VAT),” Ace Jewelers goes on to specify 23110392103001 as reference number for the James Bond watch actor Daniel Craig will wear as James Bond in the 2012 Eon Production 007 movie, Skyfall.

Still no indication of this on the Omega corporate website. No mention of it on their “James Bond” Ambassador page, nor on its news or press pages.

Ace Jewelers is readily confirmed as an Authorized Dealer for Omega on the Omega corporate website through its Store Locator, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Currently, no reference 231.10.39.21.03.001 Seamaster Aqua Terra model is listed on the Omega corporate website. However, a reference 231.10.39.21.01.001 does appear, under the “Aqua Terra Mid Size Chronometer” page. The difference in the “3″ versus “1″ digit suggests another sort of dial.

Ace Jewelers has been Tweeting via Twitter @acejewelers for several days now from Basel World 2012, the leading watch and jewelry show held each year in Basel, Switzerland.

This is a column I truly wish I didn’t have to write.

Official work-product from corporate marketing for Omega watches continues to raise questions regarding its investment as a James Bond watch brand.

Just two days ago, Omega finally got ’round to formally announcing what several of its evidently undisciplined Authorized Dealers leaked to the Internet weeks before (complete with Order from me now! divisiveness within the ranks).

Omega has created one of its least-limited limited edition James Bond watches to date — along with thousands more limited numbers on top of that. For wannabe Bond girls, I guess.

Worse yet, in support of an inexplicable emphasis on that fact that Omega has only been a James Bond watch for 13 of the 50-year James Bond movie franchise, it couldn’t even get the identification of its own inaugural James Bond wristwatch correct.

According to the press release it first put out on February 22, 2012, the GoldenEye James Bond Omega watch was a Speedmaster. You know: “The moon watch.” Following is the excerpt, which also appears in the image above left here (click on image for additional context).

Lindy Hemming, the Oscar-winning costume designer who chose the OMEGA Speedmaster as 007’s watch in GoldenEye in 1995.

Pricelessly, the PR wordsmiths at Omega, via copy that should’a been proof-read by marketing and continue reading…

Daniel Craig in-character as James Bond on the set of "Skyfall," courtesy Empire magazine

Exactly one week ago today, Empire magazine posted this photo of Daniel Craig in-character as James Bond in "Skyfall." Would you buy an Omega watch now based on speculated identification based only on what you see here?

Last Friday the thirteenth must have been a happy one for James Bond fans, considering the number of Tweets and eMails I’ve gotten with requests to identify the Skyfall wristwatch — based on this movie set image released through Empire magazine, one week ago today.

“There it is!” read one subject line.

Sorry. I still don’t see it. And, from the watch forum threads I’ve watched spring up that day, only to crash for lack of substance the next, neither does anyone else.

Anyone “credible,” that is. Of course there are those wish-watch experts who “see” without a doubt a blue titanium Seamaster Planet Ocean by Omega in this Skyfall image.

Nobody buys that. Or, rather: Nobody’s gonna buy based on that.

With all due respect, ask yourself: Why on earth is anyone looking in the first place?

I for one wasn’t even hell-bent to break news with the Quantum of Solace James Bond screen-worn watch model identification. Beyond that, I believe the difference in time between whoever actually did, versus the blogger from Timbuktu who picked it up as old news, could be measured in hours.

The Skyfall Omega won’t be any different.

Unfortunately, product placement partners are playing by 2005 rules, operating on assumptions based on what they saw with James Bond watches tied to Casino Royale.

Let’s remember some of the James Bond watch factors that had us watching 7 years ago:
