New York City—
The new Ian Fleming James Bond continuation novel, Carte Blanche, by author Jeffery Deaver was published today in the United States.
Marking the occasion, publisher Simon & Schuster held a special invitation-only VIP launch party here in New York. It’s a distinct honor to have been included among the guests here tonight.
Over the course of the new few blog posts on the James Bond Watches Blog, I’ll begin to share details most relevant to the focus we have here. At several points during the evening, Jeffery Deaver and I specifically discussed his James Bond watch choices for Carte Blanche.
It was particularly fascinating to get into details of his interest in horology as a plot device — far beyond mere awareness of the Rolex 1016 Explorer worn by Agent 007 in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1963).
Mr Deaver is one of the most approachable, likable people you could ever ask to meet. Having a sense of the moment in history here, I asked him to personally sign a copy of Carte Blanche for me, dated June 14, 2011. As he completed the text, he said, “and, I have to do this for you.” He then drew the circle, followed by markers (beginning at the 3 o’clock position, then hands, then crown, and finally case for the pocket watch you see here, about part of his last name.
You do know that Ian Fleming specified a James Bond pocketwatch, right?
But that’s all for tonight. We’ll pick up here next time with more photographs. And then there’s the interview I gave for BBC….
