Daniel Craig wearing the new Hour Vision Blue as Omega brand ambassador on behalf of Orbis International and its Flying Eye Hospital
As discussed here previously, actor Pierce Brosnan was a product spokesperson (“Brand Ambassador”) for Omega watches — independent of his role as James Bond.
Thus, we had Omega watches promoted as “James Bond’s Choice” and Omega watches promoted as “Pierce Brosnan’s Choice.”
The latter often had no connection whatsoever with Ian Fleming’s fictional gentleman agent, not to be considered James Bond watches.
When Daniel Craig assumed the 007 mantle with the production of Casino Royale, somewhat of a clearer divide separated church and state for the franchise. Daniel Craig was not a Brand Ambassador for Omega; however, insofar as his likeless to James Bond was concerned, the image of “James Bond” as Omega spokesperson was updated to include Mr Craig, though not always replacing that of Mr Brosnan.
Earlier this week, however, we’ve seen two official press releases from Omega that suggest a broadening view, if not formal change to all that.
In announcing its support for “ORBIS International and its Flying Eye Hospital in the fight against preventable blindness,” Omega refers to “brand ambassador Daniel Craig.” (A quick check of its drop-down “Ambassadors” menu, however, shows only 13 ambassadors, including “James Bond,” but not Daniel Craig.)
Clearly the ORBIS arrangement between Omega and Mr Craig is founded in a common desire to support that worthwhile mission. Omega has guaranteed “at least one million U.S. dollars” from the sale of a special “Hour Vision Blue” watch will go to the ORBIS mission.
The release goes on to quote Daniel Craig as follows:
I think it’s important to do all we can to draw attention to the invaluable work that ORBIS is doing. By visiting them in the field and seeing their team at work, I hope we will be able to make more people aware of the issue of preventable blindness and to let them know how much of a difference they can make. I’m delighted that Omega feels as strongly about this initiative as I do.
We’re delighted as well.
